Kyriakides Family

It’s simple really. We make wonderful, fresh, tasty mushrooms.

Not just the White mushrooms we have been growing since 1979 and you all know and love, but also Portobello, Oyster, Shiitake, the tantalizingly delicious Portobellini mushrooms and a plethora of other wonderful gourmet mushrooms.

You can find them in a great number of supermarkets around Cyprus or even taste them cooked from a plethora of fantastic restaurants and hotels.

Here you will find more information about our team and how we work hard to do business in a way that is ethical and safe for consumers, our employees as well as the environment.

What can we say? We are nice like that.

Once upon a time

1978

Kyriakides Mushrooms
Once upon a time the guy we like to call "the big boss", Rissos Kyriakides, had finished his university studies in Agriculture and was exploring his options for the future. He was looking to start a business that was both pioneering and challenging at the time. His pursuits brought him to London, where he took the time to visit Foyle's bookshop on Charing Cross Road. While browsing the books in the agriculture section, fate had it that his eyes were drawn to a book on mushroom growing - and that was the beginning of a beautiful journey.

1979

Kyriakides Mushrooms
Upon his return to Cyprus he was determined to build the first mushroom farm in Cyprus. He built just one growing room to produce white mushrooms as, at the time, very little was known about mushroom cultivation in Europe. Everything was done manually back then, it was really hard work!

1984

Kyriakides Mushrooms
In the wonderful year of 1984, Kyriakides Mushrooms pioneered in being one of the very first mushroom farms in the world to install an automated computer system to improve the control capabilities of the climate inside the growing rooms. Cool stuff don’t you think?

1999

Kyriakides Mushrooms
The company really becomes family oriented with weekends spent at the farm and Rissos’ children helping out with packaging. His wife, Athina, wasn’t very happy about that, obviously!

2012

Kyriakides Mushrooms
We become the first in the sector to obtain the ISO 22000 certification for all processes - production, harvesting, packaging and distribution. If you haven’t heard of this before, ISO 22000 was first developed for NASA to ensure that the food provided for astronauts was safe. When we were kids we always used to dream of becoming astronauts!

2020

Kyriakides Mushrooms
By 2020, we have gone from growing only white mushrooms to growing 11 different mushroom types - for 5 of which we have achieved organic certification. Our mushroom family is growing!

The founder

The father figure. The big boss.

Having founded the company all the way back in 1979, Rissos Kyriakides is still the heart and soul of the company.

Rissos undertook his university studies in Greece, having graduated with a degree in Agriculture. His ambition brought him to London where the whole universe conspired for his eyes to be drawn towards a book on mushroom growing!

There was not a lot of knowledge worldwide on mushroom growing at the time and Rissos always enjoyed challenges. So a wonderful journey in the world of mushrooms began!

With a vast experience in the mushroom growing industry, he has pioneered numerous times in comingup with innovative growing techniques to improve the end results.

Some nice folks abroad say that he is one of the best mushroom growers in the world. He is too humble to admit it but we are not.

Isaac Newton, the father of classical Physics had once said “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants”. We, too, feel that we are standing on the shoulders of a giant.

Distribution

Go on, admit it. You probably saw one of these wandering the streets at one point or another.

We thought the Batman movies were cool, so we dubbed our vehicles “mushMobiles”. Pretty fresh, don’t you think?

Our empire of funky transport is growing, as last year saw the addition of 2 more mushMobiles. This brought the total number of vehicles to 7, currently covering the whole of Cyprus.

The next time you stumble upon one of our mushMobiles on the streets don’t hesitate to smile and wave hello. The nice driver will give you a recipe booklet all yours to keep.

Your health and safety

Here at Kyriakides Mushrooms we take your health and safety very seriously.

Being in the food industry, we understand how important it is that our products are safe to consume. That is why we are the only company in the local mushroom sector that has achieved the ISO 22000:2018 (HACCP) certification for all processes – production, harvesting, packaging and distribution.

Have you heard of HACCP before? It stands for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points and it was developed for NASA to ensure that the food provided for astronauts was safe. Now, the principles of HACCP are applied to mushroom growing and packing in our premises.

How do we do it? Well, first all our substrate is pasteurised before any mushroom spawn is added to it and all our growing rooms are sterilised with steam between crops. Moreover, we have regular laboratory tests of the water we use for irrigation as well as testing the mushrooms themselves to ensure they are safe for you to consume. And of course, all our mushroom harvesters wear hair nets and hand gloves to ensure proper hygiene.

See? We told you we take it seriously.

Things we do right

Spent Mushroom Compost

The raw materials that remain at the end of our production cycle (some tie-wearing folks call it spent mushroom compost) are given away to be used by local farmers. Spent mushroom compost is a good source of general nutrients for plants, as well as a useful soil conditioner.

Recycling

We have partnered with some nice people over at specialized recycling plants who collect all our recyclable waste like plastics, carton and paper and make sure that they are put to good use elsewhere.

Charity

Our mushMobiles make weekly stops at local charities to ensure that they are never short of mushroom supply. Our mushrooms are then cooked for or offered to those less fortunate.

Our promise

If we were a big, boring megacorp we’d call this page our “Corporate Values”, “Business Ethics” or something fancy like that. But we are not, so we’ll just tell you what you can expect from us.

  1. Food safety is our priority here and that is why we are the only company in our industry in Cyprus to hold the ISO 22000:2018, GlobalG.A.P. and GRASP certifications.
  2. We are committed to delivering fresh mushrooms to all our clients within 36 hours of harvesting.
  3. We treat all our clients, consumers and employees with courtesy and respect.
  4. We will strive to do business in a sustainable manner, in order to leave the world a little bit better than we found it. Because how we live will define our future.
  5. We will participate and contribute to our local communities, like we have been doing since 1979.
  6. Above all, we promise you that we will always think of what we do as our passion. Never as our job.
